Anecdote* | 12 September 2001 | The day after 9/11 when the World Trade Center Towers and Pentagon were struck: "Our family members are safe! I wasn't able to call anyone there at work or cell phones. Emily had been at day care on the Pentagon grounds, luckily it was at the opposite side of the explosion. Phung called them and found that they had evacuated to the parking lot. Andy works nearby and was able to drive part way then walk the rest of the way to get her. He took a woman and child home and then we heard he was on his way home. Phung called when she got home. Courtney was working nearby in VA. She got home safely. Then we heard from Brian. He hadn't been able to call us. His cell phone couldn't call out right away. He was in DC in his office. He works in two different places and we weren't sure where he was that day. He said he was going to stay there because of the frantic traffic that he heard about over the radio. After awhile he called from home and told us he had arrived safely. He chose a route over the shortest bridge and hurried over. He did see the Pentagon catastrophe. Dan and I could finally breathe a sigh of relief. The three of them worked today outside of DC and Andy stayed home with Emily. I found out that Brian had sent an E-mail, but I haven't had my computer on, until now, Wed. evening. This is so incomprehensible." |

John Barber
Anecdote* | "Another Barber researcher and I are trying to assemble the (supposed) 9 sons of Mr. Barber. We think his name was John, or maybe James, and if he was John, he might have died in Sheboygan County in 1873 and be buried in Union Cemetery. We have definitely connected five of the brothers: John R., William H., Joseph S., James L., and Crawford B. using family obituaries. The first four of these are documented with land patents in Plymouth Township, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Crawford settled in Waukesha County. All five are mentioned in interconnected obituaries. Possible others are Curtis D., who bought land next to John R., and Aaron, who was born in Ohio and who bought one township south in Lyndon Twp., but soon moved on to Pulaski, Wisconsin. Curtis went on to Iowa. Their connection to the family is undocumented, and the father being John depends on Curtis. William H. stopped in Indiana on the way to Wisconsin, so there may be family left behind there and in Ohio. With names like James, William and John, there are many possible duplicates to consider. In addition, the family moved in about 1840 from well-documented Stark County, Ohio to newly formed Summit County, Ohio, where there were many other Barbers from the East Coast (see Barberton, for example.) Ours do not seem to be connected to the Connecticut or Vermont Barbers; Mr. Barber is said to have been born in Virginia or possibly Maryland. There is also an unrelated Barber family in Sheboygan County. The family had a penchant for using middle names and for swapping households. Many of these Barbers have different names in different censuses. Children who have documented parents are found in related households as "sons". Names do not run in the descendants, but among cousins." - Barbara Zanzig | |
