Anecdote* | 1926 | "From Lee Weiss - Beaulah was my mother's mother - letter found with Beaulah's old photographs - Kalamazoo, MI - Dec. 13, 1926 Dear Beaulah, It surely was a pleasant surprise to hear from you again and it was just by chance that I finally received it, for it had been thro a great many of the carriers hands and one of the clerks in the office brought it to my husband and asked him if it might belong to us, and as he remembered we used to correspond he brought it home to me. It was quite lucky that he happens to be Supt. of Mails in the P.O. isn't it? I am afraid it will take me some time to tell you of the relatives here. You said you wrote to Aunt Emma but that you never heard from her. She died a little more than a year ago, and Uncle Will passed away some 4 or 5 yrs. ago. There are not many relatives left on my Mother's side here as Aunt Sarah died about 2 yrs. ago. Uncle Jake Rychel is living in a house here that we call Home for the Aged. It is a very nice place and he likes it very much there. Aunt Sarah was bedridden for about 5 yrs. and he took all care of her and was very kind to her. My father is still living and he will be 84 yrs. old if he lives until Feb. 14. He isn't so very well anymore and his eyes are getting quite bad, but he gets around real well and to look at him you would never think he was as old as he is, his hair is so black yet and I doubt whether you could find a gray hair. He makes his home with Gertrude. She has one daughter who will be 17 yrs. next March and is a Junior in High School. The only relatives we now have here are the Freilink girls and a couple of their brothers. We see Lily and Fannie Lewis (as their names are now) quite often but we hardly ever see Will or Herbert, who are the ones living here. Aunt Margaret Nason lives in Detroit with her daughter Dora but isn't very well, she used to come in to see me whenever she came to Kalamazoo, but it is over a year now since she came. Her heart is very bad. I will now go on and tell you about my family. My brother Abe died about 9 yrs. ago, the rest of our family are all here and we see each other very often. John is a coal merchant here, his one son is in the business with him and the other is working for our leading paper here. They just have the two boys. Abby is married and has one girl. End of Letter" |
