Anecdote* | "De Fietsclub "Alle Vijf". by Chr. Van Abk.- Tweede druk. Alkmaar, Gebr. Kluitman, (1917). Large 8vo. Orig. colour-printed illustrated cloth, designed by Louis Raemaekers. With plates and illustrations by Louis Raemaekers. 213, (5) pp. Second edition of a popular book for boys, first published in 1911 by Christiaan Frederik van Abkoude (1884-1964). A school teacher, the author wanted to provide books for boys who did not care to read at all. He reached his goal and made his fortune with "Pietje Bell", published in 1914. Then he went to travel and in 1916 he settled in the United States of America where he published under the name of C.F. Winters. But he continued to write Dutch books for boys, which were published in the Netherlands by various publishers. The present book was designed and illustrated by the well-known artist and political draughtsman Louis Raemaekers (1869-1956), a pupil of Th.H.A.A. Molkenboer in Amsterdam and E. Blanc-Garin in Brussels. He became especially known for his anti-war cartoons during the First World War. The present title became rather popular, and the bicycle club described in the book was much imitated by boys in real life at the time. Used and restored copy, with small bookseller's label of D. Bakker, Hoorn.- (Binding sl. rubbed, recased; the first lvs. strengthened, preface lost and replaced in photostat). Cf. Bibelebontse Berg p. 394 ff.; on Raemaekers, see Vollmer 4, p. 10; Scheen II, p. 210." - from Antiquarian Bookseller | |
