Anecdote | When Lidwina was 14 she began driving a stick shift. Before, her mother had relied on her sons to drive her to the city to visit relatives. But the boys would get bored sitting around listening to the old ladies talk. Minnie told her daughter, "when you're old enough, I want you to drive me places" and that's what happened. (Witness) Anecdote | Charles Delbert Burden; When Patsy was pregnant with their 6th child, someone informed Detroit officials that Charlie was not living within the city limits as Detroit policemen were supposed to do. So, Charlie moved in with his mother-in-law, Lidwina Geiger, in her Detroit home. Patsy and the children moved in later and they all stayed for 9 1/2 years until Charlie retired. Then they moved back to their Roseville home, which had been rented out during their absense. | |
Anecdote* | Lidwina had many family members living in her home in Detroit. Her bachelor brother, Tony, lived with her until his death in 1940. That year Lidwina's youngest child was born. At the time of her brother, Elmer's, death in February 1978, she was still living in Detroit. When Lidwina moved from Detroit, she lived for 20 years in the house her brother, Arthur, had built at 18344 Brohl in Roseville. One of Patsy's sons later bought the house from Lidwina. When Lidwina could no longer manage living alone, she would divide her time between the homes of daughters Patsy and Betty, who lived next door to each other in Roseville. She joked that she'd stay with one "until she got kicked out" then go stay with the other one for a couple of weeks. She had been driving herself until the age of 94. | |
Anecdote | Lidwina went out to La Jolla CA to visit her son. A family friend of the Houtteman family had a restaurant there and Lidwina was thrilled to meet the actor William Powell. | |
Anecdote | Weenie belonged to the Schulte Card Club pinochle section. She enjoyed playing cards with sister-in-law Marie, Edwin's wife, for many years. In 2001 Marie moved to the Traverse City area of Michigan to live near her son, Dr. Michael Schulte. Lidwina really missed Marie, but played two handed pinochle with grandsons Chris and Greg, the last game when Weenie was age 100. | |
Anecdote | In honor of her 100th birthday, the Macomb County Board of Commissioners passed Resolution No 02-94 at their 21 Nov. 2002 meeting, Lidwina's actual birth date. She also received birthday greetings from Willard Scott of the Today Show. | |
