Emigration*Fred and his brother, Erwin, escaped from East Germany and lived in West Germany for two years before leaving for the U.S..
Siegfried arrived at the port of New York on the ship M.V. Italia on 22 January 1954. Fred's sister, Edeltraut Margrete, arrived on the same ship with him.
His brother, Erwin Helmut, arrived on the ship S.S. Italia on 10 August 1955. 
Milit-End*in the U.S. Navy for a couple of years, stationed in CA in 1956. He and Esther returned to MI 6 weeks after their son, Don, was born. 
Naturalization*He petitioned for naturalization in the District Court of Detroit after having lived in the U.S. since 22 January 1954. 
Occupation*a blacksmith in Germany. In the U.S. he was a house painter and later was a painter for a hospital where Esther also worked. 
NoteFred's sister, Edeltraut or Edie "Traute" , fell and hit her head on 1 Oct 2016, lapsing into a coma. She had been very ill for the previous 6 months and was weak. She was then 84 years old. Her husband was Don Mitchell who died 21 April 2021 at the age of 93. 
NoteFred's brother, Erwin Helmut, died 30 January 2022 at the age of 86 with a funeral to be held 7 Feb at Bethany Baptist on 15 Mile in Clinton Twp. His wife, Evelyn, had died 29 January 2013. He and Evelyn had lived in Sterling Heights.
