Anecdote*He spent his boyhood days at White Earth, Minnesota, where he attended school with White Earth Indians as his playmates in hunting, fishing, and swimming. Despite the hardships endured those days, he often spoke of the White Earth Indians, whose language (Ojibwe) he spoke fluently, with high regard.
