Anecdote* | 15 April 1945 | Philippine Islands; Louis' commanding officer, Lt. Robert A. Babcock of Company H, 127th Infantry, wrote a letter of condolence 15 April 1945 to Louis' father, Frank. It said, in part: "Louis had been a member of this company for nearly two years. During this time he became the close friend of many. We shall not soon forget his cheerful smile and pleasant greetings. Your son was seriously wounded on the second of February by shrapnel from an enemy artillery shell. This happened near the village of Santa Maria, Luzon, Phillippine Islands, while we were making an advance into territory held by the enemy. Louis was removed to the nearest aid station and then sent to the closest general hospital. The wounds inflicted were very severe. The shrapnel from the exploding shell penetrated his spine and a state of paralysis set in At the hospital in the early morning hours of February 18th, Louis passed away. He was laid to rest by the Catholic Chaplain of the hospital." |

Minnie had a hard time getting her boys off to school every morning, even though they lived across the street from Assumption Grotto.
