Anecdote* | "Joel G. THAYER, one of our old soldiers and pioneer citizens, passed away at the St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa Thursday evening of last week. Mr. THAYER had been in failing health for sometime and his death was no surprise to those who had interested themselves in his illness. For over a year, he had been gradually failing and while everything was done to alleviate his suffering, yet he sank rapidly. His wife has been a patient at a hospital in Iowa City and was there when he passed away. Mr. THAYER was a man of great intellectual powers and kept well posted on the current events of the times. He was a Republican and was appointed postmaster at Avery in which position he served for four years, afterwards moving to this city where he was elected mayor and then Justice of the Peace of Adams township. At one time he was a member of the Christian church in Avery. He is survived by three sons, Fred, George and Ben and two daughters, Mrs. Hattie McCOY and Mrs. Cordie PETTIT. The body was taken from Ottumwa to Cuba and laid to rest last Sunday. We understand an autobiography of Mr. THAYER';s life is somewhere among his papers and if found the Excelsior will publish. To the bereaved family The Excelsior and his Blakesburg friends unite in extending condolences." - Blakesburg Excelsior, Wapello County, Iowa - Thurs Mar 4, 1926 | |
