Mother* | Elisabeth Voss b. 1 Jun 1844, d. 16 Nov 1918 |
Birth* | 17 May 1871 | Altenilpe, Westfalen, Preussen |
Baptism | 18 May 1871 | Dorlar, Westfalen, Preussen |
Emigration* | 31 July 1901 | traveled on the ship Barbarossa, per ship record, but his naturalization papers state the Cimbria, leaving the port of Bremen on 20 July 1901, arriving in New York. His hometown was noted as Altenilpe in Germany. His occupation is not readable. His destination was Detroit to the home of his brother-in-law, Herr Anton Schulte. Note that in 1896 an entirely new type of vessel was created, the"Barbarossa" class, for the Norddeutscher Lloyd company. In the construction of these vessels the aim was to provide for an unusually large quantity of freight, as well as for a large number of passengers in the three classes, while keeping the cabin accommodation entirely separate from the freight space. The whole of the accommodation for cabin passengers was accordingly concentrated in an immense superstructure amidships, containing three decks, and fully 256 feet long. |

Her granddaughter, Sadie, wrote to her own granddaughter, Mariana in 1976, "I sure did love my grandmother very much and saw her often. She had three boys, but one died when he was eight years old. She would have loved to have a girl, so when her first grandchild (Sadie) was a girl she was happy." After January died, Alfred and his family moved in with his mother. A short time after she died the house burned down, so Alfred and his family moved back to their own home. | |
