She always said she wanted to go back to see Colorado, but never did because of this condition She lived with my parents the last 10 years of so of her life, and kept a picture of a blue Colorado columbine on the wall in her room -- framed in Pueblo, CO. Residence* | 2001 | Tucson, AZ |
Anecdote* | March 2002 | "Cousins, I returned a couple of days ago from a western trip which included a week in Tucson with mother. I thought you might like an update about your 90-year-old cousin/aunt. Basically, she's as feisty as ever! And she is absolutely committed to spending the rest of her life in Tucson, at the retirement community where she has lived since May 1995. No amount of encouragement from me will change her mind, and bring her to Pennsylvania. She continues to enjoy weekly Scrabble sessions with friends at her apartment, and to be a substitute for several bridge groups. Mobility-wise, she has slowed considerably in the past year, due primarily to the effects of her long-bad left knee. She walks with a decided limp, favoring it, which has apparently led to something resembling "shin splints" in that leg. The doctor prescribes ice (which she will not do) and rest (she could hardly rest more than she does). Her other complaint is a sore wrist, diagnosed as carpel tunnel syndrome (as she does none of the usual causal activities, this is attributed to "age"). Doctor recommends a night splint, which she will not use. Her hearing seems not to have diminished since my last visit, but is impaired. She has become the "pet" of other residents, and more importantly, the staff at the retirement community where she lives. She is watched over and tended to in both subtle and obvious ways. The maintenance staff checks each morning to be sure she's gathered her newspaper from the porch. The van driver carries her small bag of groceries from the van into her house. The manager (who gave mother her cat, Foxy) is clearly extremely attentive, as are other staff. She continues to enjoy cards, phone calls, and visits." |

Anecdote | 27 September 2011 | "Mother enjoyed a wonderful 100th birthday celebration at Elmcroft of State College, her home for the past six and a half years. The party featured the Nittany Knights barbershop quartet and representatives from offices of the US Congress and the Pennsylvania House and Senate. Elmcroft staff and residents helped devour great quantities of food provided by Wal-Mart and Subway. She had a fine time and sang along with the barber shoppers, a piano player, and others who warbled many old familiar tunes and, of course, Happy Birthday (innumerable times). The CBS local affiliate recorded the event, and a recap was featured on the 6:00 pm local news that evening." |
