Anecdote* | 1966 | "January 31, 1966 was the day to change Diane's life. She had been working as a waitress. After work she was driving from Oakdale to Modesto to pick up her son. It was a rainy night and she lost control on the slick and foggy road leading to Modesto as she was rounding a curve. The Doctors didn't think she would pull through, but she did. Unfortunately, she became addicted to pain medication due to all of the trauma she suffered, she had a very low tolerance for pain and it just got worse as the years went by. They had to put a metal box in her neck to regulate the blood flow. I don't remember the medical terms for it. But I know if you put your ear up to hers you could hear the blood pumping. She suffered minor brain damage and was plagued with headaches and would have seizures. Diane and Jimmy tried to get back together again after the accident, but just couldn't seem to stay together. Diane was always a very stuborn and of course spoiled child and hard to get along with. She wanted it her way. She tried to go back to a normal life, but it just didn't happen. She often worked as a bar maid, or in fast food places. She worked quite awhile after her accident, but she started mixing booze and pain medication and Jimmy ended up with custody with Herbie. That was the decline of Diane's life when she lost custody. She married a couple of guys - but didn't stay with them long. Then in the late 1970's, she met Ray and they lived together until her death." |

Nickname | Bub | |
Birth* | 5 January 1945 | St. Joseph Hospital, Burbank, Los Angeles, CA |
Occupation* | a machinist
Association* | Bub contributed and was a Past President of Fraternal Orders of Eagles Lodge 2143. He was also involved with the FOE Sires. When he wasn't with his fraternal brothers he was with his family. It didn't matter if they were at the Smith Ranch, the lake, or at home as long as he was with the ones he loved.
Anecdote | "Thanks for your cards, mail, calls.......... Bub always asked about you all, asking if anything was new in the genealogy lines. He was especially worried about Cuz T and asked about you often and how things were going with you..... T you know best how close he and I were (I had to call him everyday while staying at Cuz T's house last year)..... I'll try not to go into a lot of details, but he developed leg ulcers from CHF, we had them cultured a lot and never told the infections were bad and on different antibiotics.... Pat and I dressed his wounds at home twice a day and then we took him to wound care twice a week. Then they said he needed iv antibiotics, so he went to hosp to get all set up so he could get iv's at home.. Pat and I were trained in that as well. Then he finally agreed to go back to hospital for testing..... We knew he had blockages in his legs and all the docs said his legs would heal much faster if they could get the blockages unplugged. They stinted one and roto rootered another. We saw the "movies" of the before and after and they looked great...... that was on Friday the 21st. However, the contrast they use is bad on the kidneys and we were told a few weeks ago he had 50% kidney function and that they could give him meds to make his "kidneys happy".. he made it through the procedure ok, but his kidneys weren't putting anything out. They did do a stress test on his heart before the procedure and knocked him out to do a MRA (mri except a=arterial) (he was very clostophobic)so they could see where the blockages were...... We were told that the infection turned into Vancomycin resistant, so they used the last and newest antibiotic on him, his WBC's went up and down a few days..... then all of a sudden they tell us he has staph and he was septic..... we really don't know what actually killed him..... he coded twice within a very short time on Sat and he was put on life support and pretty much knocked out, although Sat evening his nurse took him down off the verced and he seemed to respond to stimuli and followed orders, squeezed Pat's hand, turned head, blinked, etc....... Sun they put him on dialysis, but his bp wouldn't come up enough to get the fluid off, just filter the kidneys at a very slow rate. The more they gave him to raise his bp, the more fluid build up..... he had over 20 pounds of extra fluid on him. There wasn't one part of his body that wasn't a purple bruise and tears in his skin all over..... He had low bp for the last few years..... with high heart rate........ but once in icu, they were very concerned about it and did what they could to regulate them, now I think they should have left it alone.... Sun evening he coded again and they declared him.... but then they got a very faint pulse, he just didn't want to go.... this allowed us all to go back in....... (since they shove you out when code blue is called)...... They did however, allow Pat to stay in there with him on Sunday when they worked on him. I was very much in denial and had positive thoughts right up to the end..... It was very hard of me not to take control after his death, since I had to do this with Mom and Diane and make the arrangements...... but I did stand back and allow Pat and the kids make the arrangements. I went with them though....... Pat's very ill sister made it up here and he nephew and his family from NM........ so I have sorta stayed on the sidelines. Sometimes I can't stand it, and go over to the house......I keep calling Pat to make sure she ate and has taken her meds.... The funeral home did a wonderful job on him to cover the bruises...... they couldn't get all the fluid off though. We had open casket on Thurs and then went out to my brother's favorite place, "The Holloway Ranch"...... even though Bub is to be cremated, his grandson wanted to carry him to the hurse, so the boys did that and I carried up the rear of the casket..... I didn't plan on it, but as they walked by me, I had to do it..... His daughter, a granddaughter, cousin talked at his funeral and several others of us had the Minister read things for us. I still think he is next door, going nuts with everyone in and out..... I never really felt the urge to call Mom and Diane and share things with him, but I feel like calling him 100 times a day... As I lay thinking in my fetal position the last few days....... my grandmother had 4 kids (that lived) -1 son 3 daughters....... my mother had 4 children 1 son and 3 daughters...... my grandmothers two middle kids went first and now my mothers 2 children have gone first.... The last living child of grandma's will turn 90 in May..... Not sure I want to live to be 90, I know I don't want to have alzheimers like she does...... Sorry I have rambled on so much........ I didn't plan on it........ I could write volumes........ Love to all........ Cuz Wendy"
