Married Name | VanderMolen
Occupation* | Jean was one of Kalamazoo's first visiting nurses. She also worked at various times in Well Baby Clinics, in the office of Dr. Martin VerHage and in the infirmary at Western Michigan Unv. She retired at age 62.
Anecdote* | "Jean will celebrate her 100th birthday with an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug 21 in the fellowship hall of Washington Square Apratments, 710 Collins. The centenarian is a lifelong resident of the Washington Square neighborhood. One of 10 children, she was born 21 Aug 1899 at her parents' home on Lake Street. At age 3 she moved with her family to Carr St. and lived there until 14 years ago, when she moved into the Washington Square Apartments. Mrs. VanderMolen attended Lake Street School, John Street Christian School and Portage Street School (now Washington School). She graduated from Bronson Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1922. She also took courses in public health at the Unv. of Michigan. Her first job was as a private duty nurse at a home in Martin. Later, she worked as a public health nurse and did immunizations in the Kalamazoo Public Schools. In the 1940s she married Abe VanderMolen, a widower, who was her neighbor on Carr St. They were married for 15 (25?) years before he died. The VanderMolens didn't have children, but she said her extended family, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews have been very important to her. A favorite pastime is playing Scrabble, which she plays with friends in her apartment complex. She rarely loses. Mrs. VanderMolen does not need glasses or a hearing aid, is very neat in appearance and prides herself in getting her makeup on straight, said niece, June Woltersom. "She is not only sharp and witty, but a joy to be with," she said.
