Anecdote* | February 1998 | In November 1997 Betty became a double amputee due to peripheral vascular disease. She had lost her right leg in 1994 and learned to use a prosthesis, but doctors weren't sure if Betty would be able to use two. Her physical therapist noted that it takes a great deal of energy to walk with two prosthetic legs. But Betty did not want to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair and took on the challenge with the support of family and her therapist. She said a lot of it was painful, but she was determined to get around and the pain lessened as she improved. The day Betty went to have surgery, her husband, Henry, fell and broke his hip in the emergency room. They rehabilitated together at a physical therapy facility in Vicksburg before Betty moved on to Tendercare in Portage. |
