William Thomas Daam
Birth* | 15 June 1895 | Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI |
Census* | 8 June 1900 | Kalamazoo Twp., Kalamazoo, MI; Thomas Dann, age 28, b Apr 1872 in Netherlands, married 7yrs (but in 1910 census, Grace's immigration yr is 1899; note from Jack Daam in January 2008: "My uncle found a marriage certificate here in Kalamazoo for Grietje and Thomas. Also, our family understanding is that Grietje had 2 children with Thomas in the Netherlands, before he married Martje in May 1893. Cornelius born September 03, 1889 and John born January 27, 1893. Then after Martje died in 1898 after her 4th child here in the U.S. somehow Grietje came over with the 2 boys, Grietje and Thomas married here in Kalamazoo, and had 2 more boys Albert (April 1900) and Harry (May 1901) born in Kalamazoo."); laborer at paper mill ; Grace, wife, age 31, b Nov 1868 in Netherlands, mar 7yrs (?), states 3 children, but there are 7 in this household; Effie, dau, age 6, b Apr 1894; Willie, son, age 5, b May 1895; John, son, age 3, b Aug 1896; Minnie, dau, age 2, b March 1898; Albert, son, age 2/12, b Apr 1900; Cornelius, son, age 10, b Sep 1889; John, son, age 7, b Jan 1893 - oldest two children b Netherlands, rest in MI - (those from Netherlands have immigration date of 1893, but that is probably the year for Thomas) |
Anecdote* | "My Great Grandfather on my father's side (would be William's father) sent away for a mail order bride then once she came over from the Netherlands he left her with all his kids. I think there were five. She couldn't take care of them so she put them in an orphanage. Some got adopted but my grandfather was one that did not. He quit school in the eighth grade but went on to be a self-educated man and a successful business owner who owned an auto parts business that he started from the back of his car during the depression. That would be Bill Sr. I do not remember my gr grandfather's name but I think I have a newspaper article about him in my safety deposit box. I think it was about him on the run for stealing a cow." - Barb Daam Briggs
Anecdote | Article in Kalamazoo Gazette: Sad Case "Thomas Dam, a fireman at Kalamazoo Paper Mill No. 1, is wanted by the officers for what seems to be a cruel desertion of his wife and six small children. Dam drew his pay at the mill last Tuesday and went to his home where he procured from his wife some money which she had saved. Leaving her with but 10 cents in the world, he disappeared, writing a note to a friend, John Morgan, in which he stated that he would not be seen again in these parts. The matter was brought to the attention of Superintendent of the Poor, Robinson, who relieved the immediate wants of the family and turned them over to Supervisor Curtenius of Kalamazoo township, as they live outside of the city limits near the old paper mill. The wife's only means of support is a cow. She has six children, the oldest seven years of age, and is about to become a mother again. Dam is said to have been a steady workman who earned good wages. The motive for his action is not known." So she is pregnant for Albert born in 1900. Had to have returned to father Harry............Jack Daam
Anecdote | for William's father, Thomas: "Thomas' birth certificate (born Thomas Kremer) had an update to his name change at the time of Aafke and Nanning's marriage in January 1874. I [Jack Daam] had the library clerk read the update and interpret it for me. He said the way it read was, Nanning was going to call him his son, not that he was claiming to be the biological father. Also, the person who registered his birth certificate, Jantje Nieuwenhuis, was Nanning's mother. This was 2yrs before Aafke and Nanning married."

(Witness) Anecdote | Marie Ann Redmond; "Winter driving conditions in Indiana brought death Saturday to Miss Marie A. Redmond, 59, widely-known Kalamazoo businesswoman, and critical injuries to her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. Emmet Redmond, also of Kalamazoo, as the three were en route on a Florida vacation. The Redmond car, operated by Emmet, skidded on icy pavement and collided with a truck on Indiana state trunkline 3 about two miles north of Hartford City. Head injuries were the direct cause of Miss Redmond's death. Emmet Redmond, 50, received head and back injuries and body lacerations while his wife, Margaret, 48, suffered a fracture of the leg and cuts over both eyes. Mr. and Mrs. Redmond were taken to a hospital at Hartford City, and hospital authorities Saturday night reported they would remain there at least two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Redmond, who reside at 814 Woodbury avenue, and the former's sister, Marie, who made her home with another brother, Clarence Redmond, 1510 North Edwards street, left Kalamazoo at 8 Saturday morning bound for Melbourne, Fla., where they had planned to stay for two weeks. Upon receiving word of the accident, Jack Redmond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Redmond, and Clarence and Dennis Redmond, brothers of Emmet, left for Hartford City."
