At 300 lbs he played center and was captain of the Hilltoppers, as Western's team was then called, during its unbeaten, untied, unscored-upon season of 1922. He was selected to Western's 75 year anniversary team in 1978 and is a member of the WMU Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduation he coached at Harbor Springs. In 1926 he began a 22 year stint as football and bastketball coach for Muskegon High School, achieving much success. His 1927 and 1937 teams won state titles and seven teams went unbeaten. Over one ten year stretch Tiny had five undefeated, untied teams that were recognized as state champions or co-champions. A heart attack forced him to leave coaching in the late 1940's, but he continued as principal of Bunker School in Muskegon until he retired in 1965. His nephew, Edward Redmond of Kalamazoo, said, "His heart was always with kids and sports. That was his main interest and his life." | |
