Emigration | Immigrants from overseas had a required first stop before being allowed entrance into Canada. From 1832 to the 1930's all had to stop at the island of Grosse Île (located in the St. Lawrence River near Quebec City - now a national historical site) to be checked for contagious diseases. Those found to be infected were quarantined, and those found healthy were released. This found many families split apart -- some to never be reunited. - per Ontario GenWeb

Anecdote* | "Frank and Esther Hoffman came to Coldwater Twp., Isabella Co., in July 1891. They moved by covered wagon with their six children from Devizes, Ontario. In the wagon, besides the family, was their clothing, food for the journey, blacksmith tools and some small fruit trees. They moved into a log house that had been built on the property by Edward Merle, an elderly bachelor. Frank Hoffman purchased the uncleared 40 acres for $5 an acre, and paid taxes for the first time on Feb. 12, 1894. The tax record shows a total of $4.64 paid: state tax, $ .84; county tax, $1.32; township tax, $2.08 and school tax, $.40. The family cleared 30 acres and acquired some cattle and chickens, while Frank set up his blacksmith shop at the west end of Main Street in Barryton. Esther had graduated from a nursing school in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York, and was also a certified school teacher, but worked as a midwife in Ontario and here in Michigan. The Hoffman's six children were Ivan, Maud, Daisy, Myrtle, Harry and Roy. When Roy was 17 he went to the Upper Peninsula with Frank Hoffman to work in the lumber camps. He carried mail from Mass City, near Ontonagon, to the lumber camp. He would leave at dawn, following the railroad tracks the six miles into Mass City, planning to be back in camp before dark. The very cold weather was not the only danger; lynx, wolves and other wild animals were numerous and made the trip very hazardous after dark."

Residence* | "Esther Bilyea lived in Coldwater Twp. the entire time she lived in Barryton. It is confusing because Barryton--the town, is in Mecosta Co., MI......but, Esther lived about 5 miles east of Barryton which was a couple miles over the county line which put her into Isabella Co., Coldwater Twp. but her mailing address was still Barryton. I know this for a fact because I live about a mile from where she lived. She died at the home of her son Ivan, still in Coldwater Twp., Isabella Co., MI. Ivan lived one mile from where Esther's home was. Another interesting thing is, Esther is buried by Frank in Sherman Cemetery. Same tombstone. Even though they were divorced. I always found that puzzling. I have a picture of her and her children at the graveside when Frank was buried." from Cathy Benedict
CauseDeath | had arteriosclerosis and fractured thigh
Anecdote* | "Thank you for the picture of my grandmother, Esther Bilyea (Audrey Wirtzfeld, des. of Wesley Bilyea, sent it to MK in Jan 2006). My brother has the same picture, he checked to see if there was a date on it, like a lot of the older pictures they weren't dated. We both agreed the picture was taken in the early 30's. The picture is just as I remembered my grandmother, brought back memories of stopping in to see her when I was a senior in high school, she lived just a couple blocks from school. My parents moved to Barryton in 1936 when I was a senior so I didn't have much time to spend with her. I have a picture of grandma and her four sisters--not dated, but they all look like the picture was taken in their younger years." Arlene Frielink Witness: Arlene Mae Tanner
