Anecdote* | "Roy Hoffman married Mary E. Tice on June 28, 1910. The two oldest children were named Franklin and Esther after their grandparents; twin daughters Dora and Doris were born later, but Dora died at just three months. Roy bought the farm from Frank in 1917 after living on the farm with him for years. There were now 80 acres, with 40 acres that were cleared by Roy and Franklin (his son) and Esther (his daughter). Roy and Mary were married for 62 years, working together on the farm to raise hay and grain, and they had a small dairy herd. Mary raised chickens, hatching them in an incubator and rarely losing a chick. She kept between 200 and 300 laying hens and sold eggs. Their life was not without tragedy though, Franklin (son), 19 years old, drowned in Coldwater Lake July 7, 1929, just three days after Roy's birthday. The July 4th holiday never was the same for the family again." | |
