Anecdote* | Marion stayed on the family farm east of Mattawan for seven years after the death of Sidney, with only the help of her young son, Nelson and a nephew, Homer Essom. She sold the farm, moved to Kalamazoo, then on to Battle Creek near the famous Kellogg Sanitarium. There Marion became a friend to Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, inventor of corn flakes, a skilled surgeon, promoter of vegetarianism and adopted father to fifty homeless children who lived at the sanitarium. Marion helped the head nurse and taught the many children skills for living. Around 1910-12 Marion went to Colorado with a group of the Seventh Day Adventists from the Kellogg Sanitarium. Although she was then around 65, she homesteaded two ranches, one in her own name and one as a soldier's widow. Tweny years later she moved to Chicago to live with her grandchildren. But she believed that city to be an unhealthy place to live and so returned to Battle Creek. | |
