Anecdote*December 1931Mary A. Reed; Mr. and Mrs. (Mary A. Reed) C.C. Otis celebrated fifty years of life together at their West Vine St. home in December 1931. Four children, Miss Florence of Oak Park IL, Harrison Gray Otis of Beloit WI, Walter Reed Otis of Royal Oak MI and Arthur F. Otis of Glen Ellyn IL returned for the event. The couple was married in 1881 in Olivet, where Mary was born. During their life together, they traveled from coast to coast. In Seattle in 1883 they traveled over the Northern Pacific railroad just three weeks after the last spike had been driven. While there Mr. Otis was instrumental in founding Puget Sound Academy. In 1887 they moved to New York City where Mr. Otis became financial secretary of the American Home Missionary Society. Around 1921 they established their home in Kalamazoo, where Mr. Otis became a well known realtor.
