Anecdote | "There was a Church Bingo event when Grandma was a young bride, newly married. She happened to win the prize, a 5 or 10lb sack of flour. Great-grandma said to her, "Acchhh, Caroline, you don't even know what to do with that, you give it to me." Well, Grandma said proudly, clutching the sack to her chest, "I may not know what to do with it, but my mother will!" and she ran home with the flour. To her dying day she was so proud of that moment, I think it was the only time she stood up...she was so much younger than Grandpa & of course a whole other generation again from Minnie."
Anecdote | "When Aunt Marie worked, Grandma Caroline Schulte cared for Mike in the house just behind. He grew up with Aunt Carol as a quasi-older-sister. He used to cry when he had to go home. I felt the same way. When we moved away from Detroit, I dreaded leaving my Grandma's house...that was what was stable and un-changing for me. I remember the particular smell of each area of the house & Grandpa had his office upstairs. Both Mike & I never smoked (nor my sister Kendall), but everyone else in the family did. I've met a few older people on my Meals on Wheels route...some of the women have houses that remind me of Grandma's, but they all have that lingering smell of cigarettes in the back-ground. With Grandma though, everything had bleach as well. And she used to wash everything, every day. I cannot imagine the housework she did. Always with the wringer washer & always hung in the fresh air to dry. She didn't feel the automatic washers get clothes clean. She used to strip the beds out from under the kids (even when they were adults). They'd roll to one side & she'd pull up the sheets & then to the other while she removed them altogether. Then they'd sleep on, but it is 4:30 a.m. & she was in high gear! Whew! Always mass at 6 a.m. at Sacred Heart until she fainted one day & it scared her & embarrassed. Even then, she always watched it on TV. She was lucky in that she could shop at the corner grocery, Italian vegetable market on Gratiot (Randazzo's) & her friend Dorothy Versale (across the street on Brohl) took her to the big grocery down the block. I really miss grandma. She loved to mow her own lawn & loved that house. "I got it knocked," she'd boast. She was more of a loner, but she loved the kitchen table where she'd knit afghans, smoke her cigarettes, drink coffee or tea & watch everyone coming up & down the street. She had many offers on that side lot, but never would sell out because of her view...all the way up to Gratiot, over to "Frenchie's" behind and so on. She loved watching people come & go up & down the streets, but was not as gregarious as many others."
Anecdote* | "My grandma drank quite a bit for many years, although I never personally saw her drink or drunk. I do know that once my mother took her for a few weeks at our house in Jackson, to dry her out. But when my mother died, less than 2 years ? after my grandfather had passed, she got very, very sick after a drinking binge. She described the DT's. She told God, if he would let her live through it, she would never touch another drop of alcohol & she never did. My Aunt Carol has some bad memories, but Grandma was very, very good to me. In her later years, she didn't really remember who I was, she never mentioned my mother. My mother died of alcoholism at age 44. I think Gramma may have wiped it from her mind as it caused her so much pain to lose her daughter and it hit close to home with the drinking. Before she forgot who I was, when I was stationed in Germany, she used to write to me. It was a chore for her, she wasn't a reader or a scholar...she left school early with some sort of disease as a teen & never went back. But she always acted as if she thought she should know me, and she was always very close to us. She really impressed my husband Warren as a "feisty old lady." Because of my military service, I didn't see her on a regular basis and so... Grandma was always very open & honest with me & never tried to hide the fact that she drank...she was very frank about everything."
Anecdote | "Grandma Caroline Schulte used to love to knit. I still have two of her afghans. She knitted one for me when I was a kid, and the other was one she did for my mother. She would knit for anyone if they brought/bought the yarn. " from Kim Hagen

Anecdote* | Mariana and Jill visited with Marion Berkholz and Rita in May 1996. Rita recalled that she was 8 years old the first time she saw her cousin, Rosemarie, who was born in 1929. She was anxious to meet Rosemarie, wondering what an adopted baby would look like.
Anecdote | Rita belonged to the Schulte Card Club.
Residence* | Fraser, MI | |
Anecdote | This is what Rita brought to my life: I met you shortly after my own father passed away. Though I had what turned out to be a great support structure in place after losing our parents, you and your family brought some steadiness to the Bedz family. As the five of us merged with our new extended family I suspect we all learned something different from you. I was twelve and did not know what regular was when it came to families. (your own kids can argue the definition of “regular”) You showed me that older people were vibrant and fun. I saw that families grow, merge and become stronger. I learned how to play cards and games as a social activity with family at your table(s). I listened there as we all discussed everything from politics to relationships to current events. I did not know that I was learning but as I grow older I realize now that you were always teaching. I doubt that you intended to instruct me much, but you did. I watched the family that my brother Ed married into and used it as a model for the life I wanted to live. You were my best link to those in your generation. You told us all many stories about growing up in the 30s and 40s. You taught us all about sacrifice, determination, fair play and doing what is right even when it is not easy. You seemed to know when to speak up, when to shut up, and when to let others figure it out for themselves. I pray that others learned as much from you as I did. I love you, and I'll miss you. Tell everyone up there we say hello and that we’ll see them soon. Posted by: John Bedz - Dearborn, MI - Son-ish Sep 27, 2012
