Anecdote* | Jay E. Moses, 38, of 1135 March St., former Lockshore Farms, Inc. salesman, machinist's mate second class aboard the transport Joseph Hewes, which was sunk the first day off Fedala and Casablanca, and later transferred to the transport Tasker H. Bliss, which went down the morning of the fourth day, is home on a 30 day survivor leave. Moses said of his first encounter, "Ships in our convoy were notified to be on the aleert for approaching subnarines. After I went below to prepare for any emergency, I put on two life belts, and filled my pockets with canned rations, pliers and a flashlight. "An hour passed and nothing happened, so a member of our gun crew and I decided to take a shower bath and see if we could get some much needed sleep while we were off duty. "We were both in the shower when the torpedo struck the Hewes forward. I grabbed a pair of skivies. We were so busy from then on I did not even think to get myself a life belt. "The bow of the Hewes dropped soon after she was hit and we all knew she was sinking. We opened the hatches all the way from the engine room to the top side so the men below could escape and then we went top side and straddled the rail helping to transfer wounded and sick men into the life rafts and boats that had been put overside. "It was pitch dark, but we did not abandon ship until we made sure our injured men had been taken care of. By the time I went overside, I did not have much more than a two or three foot jump to reach the water. "I swam around the tail and stayed clear of the ship. There was little suction as the Hewes went under because she had filled with water. I finally came to what turned out to be a floating hatch door and I crawled aboard. "There men in the water all around me, calling for help. Whale boats were moving around answering the calls and picking up the survivors, and so long as I knew I wasn't drifting seaward I let them take the men who were swimming around first. "I was in the water about two hours when I heard in the distance what I believed was a whale boat and I calle for them to come and get me. 'Hold up your hand, sailor', somebody called from the darkness and as the boat passed by, somebody grabbed my arm. But it was covered with grease and all and I missed by chance. "Later I got aboard a raft and we were picked up by a destroyer. "We were eating dinner on the Bliss when we felt a tremendous vibration and knew instantly that some other ship had been hit. We ran topside in time to see the crew of the Edward Rutledge going overboard. "We had gone through the same experience and were shouting and kidding the sailors as they jumped into the water and then all of a sudden we got ours - a torpedo amidships. "It did not seem so bad this time, because it was broad daylight. We were picked up by a land invasion boat and taken ashore." | |
