Anecdote | Martin Rychel was one of the first deacons of the Dutch Christian Church, east of Dispatch, which was later disbanded with members joining churches in Dispatch, Downs and elsewhere.
Anecdote | Like his brother, John, Martin was a self-made lawyer. Both were prolific readers.
Anecdote* | Martin Rychel came to Kansas in 1871 with his parents. His death marked the passing of a man who had been of great value to the community and whose life was a service to his fellowmen. He did not allow his mind to wander away with his declining years, being always alert and ready to discuss the leading topics of the day. Martin was a staunch Democrat. His long life in Kansas saw it rise frrom an unknown prairie to a well developed community. Martin helped build up schools and churches and never thought of it as a burden or a sacrafice. His life was an example to his children and associates that being followed will always make them worthy citizens. The Congregational Church where his service was held could not hold the large crowd that came from far and near to pay tribute to the memory of a true Kansas pioneer.
