Anecdote* | Wheeler was raised in Colchester and remained there until about 1858 when he bought a 40 acre farm near the town hall in Malden. Later he owned a 200 acre farm where he built an attractive home and farm buildings. A successful farmer, Wheeler was a director of the South Essex Agricultural Society and president of the Malden and Anderson chapter. He was also active in civic affairs, especially in the Liberal Party. He held many offices in the town. He also was a leader in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Amherstburg as a trustee. His obituary noted that the procession for his funeral was the largest ever seen, almost 200 carriages being in line. | |
