Anecdote* | Walter was born to a prominent family whose last name was given to a major thoroughfare on Detroit's east side. He was ordained a priest in 1945. He was a key figure in trying to usher in changes in the Catholic Church in the 1960's following the Second Vatican Council. He was named an Auxiliary Bishop in 1968 and retired in 1995. Bishop Schoenherr was a compassionate man and leading advocate among Detroit clergy of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's. He also was a co-signer of a letter to Catholics in 1998 on the morality of nuclear deterrence, that it "not be an end in itself but a step on the way toward a progressive disarmament." | |
