Anecdote* | 2002 | "My parents just celebrated their 60th anniversary. My father was in the army and they had a furlough wedding on May 23, 1942. Much like in the movies, all their friends and family gathered at the church, wondering if my father would make it -- not of lack of devotion, but because army furloughs were often canceled with notice. I have heard about the patriotism in our country back then, and imagine it must have been much like we experienced since September 11th. Complete strangers had the church reserved to renew their wedding vows. When the priest, however, explained my parents' situation, and their time constraint, the couple gladly offered the church to the young army man and his bride to be. On Easter Sunday of this year, my mother needed emergency surgery. Their love and devotion was never more clear to me. My mother was in the hospital for 19 days. My father stayed with her day and night, and when she was more stable, he would only leave her side for a few hours a day, when I or my siblings would stay with Mom. Much of the hospital staff: doctors, nurses, therapists, even the cleaning crew, commented on the devotion. It is refreshing! Two months later I am still inspired! On behalf of my parents, I send you these brief words of their story." |
