Anecdote* | PIONEER CITIZEN PASSES AWAY AT NINETY-TWO [Bonne Terre Star News-Register, Friday, October 11, 1918] John B. Hart, a pioneer citizen of St. Francois County, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kay at Desloge at 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon of general debility, aged 92 years, 2 months and 22 days. The funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church South, at Desloge by the pastor, Rev. Madison Combs, at 2 o'clock, after which the remains were interred in the McHenry Cemetery. John B. Hart was born two miles north of Farmington on July 9, 1826. He was son of the late Michael Hart, a native of Ireland, who located in St. Francois County along with the Murphys in the early part of the century and was one of the county's first sheriffs. John B. Hart was married to Miss Sarah Jane Walker, a daughter of the late Laken Dubart and Elizabeth Murphy Walker, on November 6, 1855. He later spent two years in California in search of gold. Barring this absence from the county and three years that he served his country in the war of the Rebellion, he continued a resident of the county throughout his long life. Most of his life he enjoyed splendid health. After he had passed the 85th year, he frequently walked from his home at Doe Run to Farmington, a distance of 5 miles, and back, and enjoyed the hike immensely. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hart. Six of them are still living and are Thomas Hart, Desloge; S. B. (Pete) Hart, of Flat River, Mattie (Mrs. Aaron Hood) of Desloge; Margaret (Mrs. John Angove) of Bonne Terre; Clara (Mrs. Perry Kay) Desloge; Maud, (Mrs. Frank Calvird) of Bonne Terre. four children, Emma, Lucetta, Fred and Erastos -- and their mother preceded the father and husband in death. The mother passed away on July 1, 1911. Later Mr. Hart was united in marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Black, who with the above children of the first marriage survives him. --Farmington News. JOHN B. HART 1826-1918 John B. Hart, father of S. B. Hart, died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clara Kay, of Desloge, Tuesday at 1 o'clock p.m. at the age of 92 years. Mr. Hart was born July 9, 1826. He leaves six children to mourn his death - one son at Flat River, S. B. Hart, who is well known here, and Mrs. Aaron Hood and Tom Hart of Desloge, Mrs. Angove and Mrs. Frank Calvird of Bonne Terre. The funeral was at the M. E. Church at Desloge, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Combs, at 1 o'clock Thursday, and interment at the McHenry cemetery. [The Farmington Times, Oct. 4, 1918]

CauseDeath | fell off a porch and developed paralysis
Anecdote* | "Mrs. Hart, on the 7th day of June, had gone on a visit to her son, S. B., of Flat River, and Tuesday, June 27, though feeble, but having been walking around, she sat down near the edge of the porch. In attempting to rise she fell off, sustaining injuries which were then thought not serious. Medical aid was immediately summoned but the shock was too severe for her, and she gradually grew worse until she peacefully passed away at 10:10 A.M., Saturday, July 1, 1911, at the age of 82 (80) years, 8 months and 14 days. Her brothers and sisters all preceded her to the shore beyond."
