Education* | from Muskegon High School, Muskegon Junior College, received a B.A. degree from Western Michigan University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Ohio State University where he was a full professor and researcher until coming to Western Michigan Unv. in 1968, retiring in 1987.
Association* | American Speech and Hearing and Language Association; International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics; American Physics Association; American Association for the Advancement of Science; member of PGA Golf Association and the Kalamazoo Country Club.
Anecdote* | Professor Courtney Stromsta dined with presidents and Nobel Prize winners and was internationally known for his work, but he always wanted to be called "Courtney" rather than "Dr. Stromsta." A stutterer himself, he spent a year studying medicine at the University of Chicago before deciding on a career of treating those with his own speech handicap. He was dedicated to his work, often establishing speech clinics and doing research in foreign countries, but he always remained dedicated to his family and took them on his travels throughout Europe, the Soviet Union, northern Africa and the U.S. His daughter noted, "He was absolutely the funniest person I know. He could take any bad situation and find something humorous with it. He even did with his cancer." Some of his favorite times were when his entire family was on the golf course. He was also an avid woodworker, filling the family home with furniture, clocks and shelves.
Death* | 16 May 1995 | Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI |
Note | Dr. Stromsta was survived by his wife, Rose; son Dr. Scot (Patricia); daughter, Sveri (John) May all of Kalamazoo; 6 grandchildren: Karl-Eric, Derek and Annalise Stromsta; Leana, Kerstin and Jonathan May; 2 sisters, Euneva Nelson of Barrington, IL and Darlene Claytor of Muskegon; several nieces and nephews.
Note | Memorial donations suggested to Visiting Nurses Association, S.W. Michigan Hospice or the American Lung Association.
